What does “sustainability” mean for the Casino Project?

For us, sustainability means protecting Yukon’s land, water, and people — not just for the life of the mine, but for future generations. It means responsible design, strong partnerships with Yukon communities, and constant care for the environment throughout every stage of development.

How is Traditional Knowledge being included in the Project?

Traditional Knowledge from Yukon First Nations is integrated into site design, environmental planning, wildlife management, and cultural protection. These insights help guide decisions that reflect local values and respect Indigenous ways of knowing.

How is the Casino Project protecting water quality?

Since 2008, we’ve studied the site’s water systems through ongoing geochemistry, hydrology, and water quality monitoring. This long-term data helps ensure that mine activities won’t negatively affect downstream communities, fish habitat, or drinking water sources.

What is being done to protect wildlife in the area?

We’ve developed detailed Wildlife Mitigation and Monitoring Plans with First Nations and the Yukon Government. This includes caribou, moose, bears, birds, and fish species protections, long-term monitoring, controlled road access, and adaptive management plans.

How will fish habitats be protected?

The Project includes a Fish Habitat Compensation Plan to create or restore 18,000 m² of fish habitat, focusing on Chinook salmon, Arctic grayling, and round whitefish. This work is done in partnership with First Nations and fisheries experts.

What happens to the land after the mine closes?

The Casino Project includes full closure and reclamation planning from the start. This means returning the land to a stable, natural condition after operations end, including revegetation, water management, and long-term environmental monitoring.

How will tailings and waste rock be safely managed?

Tailings will be stored in a carefully engineered Tailings Management Facility (TMF), designed to exceed Canadian Dam Association and Global Industry Standard guidelines. The design was guided by extensive technical studies and consultation with First Nations, regulators, and independent experts.

Is the Casino Project part of any independent sustainability programs?

Yes. Casino Mining follows the Mining Association of Canada’s Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) program — a nationally recognized environmental and social responsibility standard.

How are Yukon communities involved in sustainability decisions?

Community engagement is built into every stage of the Project. We hold regular meetings, workshops, and public information sessions where Yukoners can share input that shapes project design, monitoring, and community benefit programs.

How does the Casino Project support local research and innovation?

The Casino Project supports local research and innovation by partnering with Yukon-based initiatives like Yukon Seed, a First Nation owned company, to collect native plant seeds for future reclamation efforts. This collaboration helps advance ecological restoration practices tailored to the unique subarctic environment. By contributing to a growing library of local seed knowledge, the project is helping to ensure that mine closure and land remediation efforts are both scientifically grounded and regionally appropriate.
