Selkirk First Nation, Capstone Mining Corp. And Casino Mining Corp. Partner To Keep Selkirk Fish Camp Traditions Active

Selkirk First Nation is determined to keep its fish camp traditions alive, despite conservation closures on the 2014 Yukon River Chinook salmon fishery.

Capstone and Casino Mining have both joined to support Selkirk’s initiative.

“The 2014 salmon fishing closure along the Pelly River has affected Selkirk people’s food supply and traditional practices of harvesting salmon,” said Selkirk First Nation Chief Kevin McGinty. “Selkirk First Nation, Capstone and Casino realize the impact the closure has had on Selkirk people and have come together to help keep our fish camp traditions alive”.

In their fish camps, Selkirk First Nation people come together as families every summer to process salmon and teach younger family members Selkirk’s traditional ways of living on the land; harvesting, smoking, drying and sharing fish.

With Pelly River fishing closed this year for conservation, Selkirk has decided to bring in sockeye salmon from the Skeena River to keep these traditions alive.

This initiative is made possible with financial contributions from Capstone Mining Corp. and Casino Mining Corp..

“Capstone is pleased to continue to work with Selkirk First Nation, this time as a partner in this important community initiative,” said Ron Light, the general manager of Capstone’s Minto mine.

Casino Mining Corp., newer to working with Selkirk, also was quick to come on board.

“We are pleased to be part of this joint initiative to provide sockeye salmon to Selkirk First Nation to help maintain the First Nation’s cultural values and traditional way of life,” said Casino Mining Corp. President Paul West-Sells.
